So we did a lot of talking yesterday in our review of Christian Siriano’s Spring 2017 collection. So, we won’t do that much of talking today, but instead just chat quite casually about the fun street style fashion this year. As the New York streets are turned into catwalks for fashionable people, it’s always fun to see street wear turned up a notch of two. To be honest, the fashion people have mostly worked trends for summer 2016 and fall (read our trend report here!) But the real gems however are the fun, dorky, and statement close-ups of details! We just adore them, don’t you?
Christian Siriano Spring 2017
We slam the industry for a lot of things. If it’s not the elitism, it’s consumption, or the lack of ethnical diversity (etc). And still we put up with it all because the power of fashion and beauty goes beyond the industry’s limits. Not to forget, this is us generalizing. There are of course glimts of the real world included and Christian Siriano’s Spring 2017 show did just that. He included everyone, from body shape to skin tone, which unfortunately is an exception to the norm.
Background
If you’re one for reality shows, you might remember that Christian Siriano (b.1985) won the fourth season of Project Runway in 2008. He soon launched his own fashion label and have for years been a recurring feature at New York Fashion Week. He has also dressed famous faces like Victoria Beckham, Michelle Obama and Sarah Jessica Parker. Even though he’s been in the industry for long now, he’s considered to be one of the most prominent uprising American designers.
Christian Siriano Spring 2017
The core color scale of the collection is black, white, orange and turquoise. This remains the basis of the collection as it plays with fabrics, silhouettes, volume and the style of refinement. With dresses being the main piece, Siriano makes sure to include classic, statement and contemporary ones. They pend from ruffles to statement sleeves, sheer fabrics and subtle embellishment. The opening looks differs from the core however, as they feel like a combination of Dolce & Gabbana’s classic Italian woman (with their statement sunnies and striped fabrics) and a trendy Instagram-fashionista.
Thoughts on the collection
In contrast to other runway shows, this collection has wearable pieces that would fit realistically in the daily life. With a crop top over a maxi dress in a pattern with a resemblance to marble, some of the looks are a reflection of the modern fashionista’s wardrobe. Other looks are balancing between classic basic and classic glam. As the black defined suit, the white 70s dress or the dress in embellished arms and a simple body (see below). And these looks works perfectly and is definitely something that people would wear now. Not to forget, the opening looks comes with a sassy and classic vibe to them.
However, the collection swings from being Instagram-friendly to pieces that feels both outdated and not thought-through. An orange dress with oversized ruffles in a silky material could be a hit 10 years ago, but in context of the other refined pieces, it feels off. And this is where the problem lies, some looks feels out of date and the contrast with the chic statement sleeves, reveals the quality difference. If the looks don’t work it’s because they’re either too boring (in relation to the previous chic looks), or they’re too much.
Conclusion
There are some real gems in the collection but also more low points than necessary. It’s no doubt that Siriano has talent and it’s a question of when and not if, he’ll establish his name on a global level. But the lack of coherent quality might be the reason why Siriano is not there, yet. As for now though, could that white dress with the statement sleeves just pleeease show up in my wardrobe?

The Only Mascara Hacks You’ll Ever Need
If you haven’t caught the buzz of long lashes and mascara yet, how are you even real about your beauty life? We’re the dorkiest of them all when it comes to lashes and ways to do mascara. And being someone who has quite long lashes, I do claim to know my mascara game quite alright (being all sassy here, I know!). So here are some of the best mascara hacks:
How To Get Volume
To get voluminous lashes, preheat your eyelash curler, let it cool a bit and then bend your eyelashes. The heat works the same way as you curl your hair with an iron.
How To Get Thick Lashes
To get thick lashes, apply a few layers of mascara. Apply powder with another brush and then apply some final coats of mascara. The powder makes the lashes look thicker!
How To Get Fuller Looking Lashes
Without adding the falsies, you can create the illusion of more lashes by using the eyeliner. Do the eyeliner on the inside of the upper lid, then apply your mascara and voíla your lashes will look fuller!
How To Apply Mascara properly
The proper way of doing it is to put the brush by the roots of your lashes. Then slowly drag the brush outwards, while doing this, carefully pull the brush from right to left. Imagine creating a zig-zag pattern on your lashes. Repeat 4-5 times depending on how you want them!
And a bonus tip
As big nerds of a nice eyeliner on the upper lid, we gurantee that a good liner will also help your lashes look fuller. If you don’t want to go for a full eyeliner wing, make small dots/strokes on your lash line with an eyeliner pencil. This will make the lashes look fuller and thicker!

Fashion And Art
The beauty of fashion is all the layers that is to it. We have the commercial fashion, the editorial fashion, street style fashion and so many more. In this week’s Stories we’d like to highlight the artsy aspect of fashion. As everything is art (and art is everything), we do believe in the magic of combining artistic paintings and patterns with the aesthetic of fashion.
History of fashion and art
The combination of art and fashion is not a new phenomenon. One famous combination of art and fashion, is the collaboration between fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli and artist Salvador Dalí. The two combined their artistic minds during the 1930s and the result became the
infamous lobster dress. From the pure and conservative fashion of the 1930s, a dress featuring a lobster was of course chocking but nevertheless quite a fun change. Not to mention that it fitted perfeclty in Elsa Schiaparelli’s sweet world of fashion nonsense.
A few decades later, Yves Saint Laurent’s 1965 collection featured works of several artists, including artist Piet Mondrian. The most iconic looks from the collection would be the dresses featuring Mondrian’s minimalistic and geometric patterns. The print of the paintings blended superbly well with the popular A-line silhouette and to this date, these are some of the famous dresses to have been made. The dresses are true to the 1960s core but are timeless in their classic and sophisticated style.
Fashion and art today
Today, collaborations with designers and artist continues. Even though they’re often not as highlighted as they used to be, there have been some gems in the making. A collaboration that gained attraction and was widely appreciated was the 2012 collection of Louis Vuitton. Co-created with Yayoi Kusama, the fashion house and artist made a collection consisting of her famous dots. Another fun collab was between fashion house Marni and artist Rop Van Mierlo in 2013 that featured patterns of animals in popping colors.
Some final notes:
As we do love our history we’d love to see more collaborations that connects the old and new. Not to forget the ability to literally walk around in art, both in its terms of fashion but also by highlighting artists. The mixing of ideas from two worlds to create one, remains an important part of the cultural development of fashion. Even though fashion designers are great at creating their own patterns (hello Mary Katrantzou), it’s still something unique when the best of two unites. Fashion and art is the way to go!
