Bill Cunningham

In honor of legendary street style photographer Bill Cunningham (who passed away last week), this week’s spotlight post is dedicated to him.

Life of Bill Cunningham

Bill Cunningham (1929 - 2016) was a New Yorker at heart and a street style photographer at mind. His iconic pictures of the everyday fashion of the New Yorkers have been a feature in fashion since the 1970’s. Born and bred in Boston, and two months at Harvard University, he moved to New York when he was 19. From an early age he got in touch with fashion, a love that would last his entire life. Before bill cunninghambecoming a fashion photographer he designed and created women hats. Famous people such as Marilyn Monroe och Jackie Kennedy wore his creations. His photographies were discovered in the late 1970’s by the New York Times and he had regular columns in the paper until his death. Bicycling around New York in his blue jacket and constantly working, he captured it all.

Legacy of Bill Cunningham

The corner of 57th street and 5th avenue was one of his favorite spots to capture street style fashion from. With his eye for fashion he picked up current trends, as well as introducing new designers to a wider audience. Cunningham was more interested in the style of ordinary people rather than styled celebrities, a perspective he remained true to during his time as photographer. He saw the city and the fashion transform through his lens for over 40 years. When people looked at the fashion of the runway, Cunningham focused on the fashion of the people. Cunningham have done several exhibitions through the years and in 2010 a documentary about his life was made. Street style fashion, and fashion in general, is changed through the mind and eye of one brilliant fashion icon.

Thank you Bill.

Audrey Hepburn: An Icon Through Time

Folks, have you read our story on Audrey Hepburn? If not, here it is again:

Hepburn, Audrey Hepburn. It may have been over 23 years since the Hollywood icon left us, but her legacy has kept the light going. To us, she is an icon through time.

Roman Holiday

Her style and elegance followed her through life, and her role in Roman Holiday marked the beginning of her time as a fashion icon. One of her most iconic look from the movie was the calf-length skirt with the sleeved shirt and the belt to accentuate her waist, all in a neat proportion. The New Look collection by Christian Dior was right in time and fitted Hepburn perfectly. The legendary designer Edith Head was the woman behind the Roman Holiday outfits, whom later received an Academy Award for her work. Not only the fashion made its impact during the movie, but also the iconic haircut that took her from cute to edgy. Her pixie cut enhanced her well-defined eyebrows and her doe eyes.

Sabrina

From Roman Holiday, her next big movie style-wise, was Sabrina. With creations signed by Hubert De Givenchy (also a lifelong friend of Hepburn), and a short hair cut she lit up the screen. The balance with feminine style and her petite, boyish, all-black set raised the fashion bar.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s

Hepburns elegance was, of course, in center of the timeless movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Playing the role with humor and class, not only did she scored an Oscar, but secured her place as an all-time Hollywood star. The quirky comments, elegant gestures and the fragile character of Holly Golightly were contributing factors as well, but it was Hepburn’s persona that gave it life. But Hepburn wasn’t the only star in the movie, her equal match was The Little Black Dress, signed Givenchy. The LBD gave life to the character as much as Hepburn’s class gave the old - but new - clothing piece life.

Personal Style

Nevertheless, was it not only in her movies her style was a game of perfection. Outside the film industry, her taste for simplicity and delicacy was present and relevant to the core of her nature. With simple lines and a minimalistic base she never failed to look her very best. Her years in Rome grasped the value of timelessness in style and the eternal city remains a metaphor for her legacy through time.

Summer Hairdos

If there’s one season where hairdos are not only chic but also helpful it’s during the summer. Hot temperatures and hair down is usually a messy and sweaty combo! Folks? Here’s our summer hairdos and the best part of it is that they’re all easy to do!

Top knot bun

An old but gold hairdo that works whenever. Both functional, practical and chic. For a proper bun, use a hairdonut (or a sock). For a messy bun, tie your hair into a ponytail. Take the hair in the ponytail and twist it around the root of the ponytail. Secure with bobby pins and finish with dragging some hair sections loose.

Side braid

Another classic go-to that’s kind of everybody’s choice for the summer. And it’s not harder than picking a braid style you love and braid it sideways. Leave your fringe alone to give a more boho look. Pro-tip is to drag some hair sections loose after you’re done to create a more thick look.

Braided low bun

A preppy hairdo that is especially favorable for midpart hair styles. Do a tight low braid and twist the braid around the root of it. Secure with bobby pins or a see-through tofs.

Scarf do

Perhaps more of a chic accessory than a hairdo, but tieing a scarf around your head and releasing your neck from the hair is worth it. Do a knot or a bow with the two ends and have a nice hair accessory as well.

Braided Ponytail

Or why not a classic ponytail but a braided one? A high ponytail that’s braided is so chic and an easy way to get your hair out of the way. Your neck will be free from sticky hair and you can focus on enjoying summer rather than dealing with you hair.

Folks, what are your favorite summer hairdos?

How To Wear Colors

We’ve already talked quite a lot about colors, how to dress in scale and how to work the pastels. But as doing new things demands some reminding and encouraging, let’s deal with how to wear colors once more!

Why should you wear colors?

We know that some people are just not meant to wear colors and that’s okey. But for all doubters out there, or all of you who are curious but don’t know how to go on about it, this one’s for you! Colors are not only a fun way of adding life to Beauty Pastelsyour outfits, it can also be an empowering statement. Colors are associated with different emotions and feelings, and you’re not the only one that’s affected by the color you wear, the people around you are too. Yellow is for instance associated with energy, joy and intellect (just look at Chiara Ferragni’s outfit below!). Pink is healthy, happy and sweet. Red is love, passion and power. If you have an important day ahead of you, why not pick an outfit in an empowering color?

How to begin to wear colors

We’re not necessarily saying that you should opt for a head-to-toe colorful outfit (even though we love those!). What we’re saying however, is that you can begin small and work yourself up. By wearing colors in a small scale you add the colors and you get used to seeing yourself with colors. A scarf, an accessory, a bag or one single clothing piece can be a small step in the right direction for instance. If you pick a colorful top, match it with neutral colors to tone down the intensity. Perhaps orange with grey or white or even a nude color? The choice is yours really!

Do’s and Don’ts if you’re shy about colors

  • Do wear colorful accessories and single pieces if you want to begin small.
  • Don’t wear colors with patterns if you’re unsure about colors in general as you don’t want to have more focus on the colors.
  • Do wear colorful pieces with neutral colors such as white, grey, black and nude.
  • Don’t wear colors in situations you don’t want to attract attention. Colors are a bold statement and should be treated that way. If you’re uncertain, stick to what you know and love.

Folks, what are your ways on how to wear colors?
