A-line

A-line? Yes folks, after the well-known collection by Christian Dior in 1947 aka The New Look, Dior launched the A-line in 1954. Just as it sounds, the silhouette is in the shape of an A (though with some defining of hips and waist).

As the fashion of the 1950’s was defined by Dior’s new look with corsets and an hourglass figure, the silhouette became a counterpart to the existing fashion. As it didn’t require a corset, was easy to move around in and quite sporty in its form, the dress was well received by many. In 1958 Yves Saint Laurent launched the classic A-line dress (below), which is how we define and think of the silhouette today. However, it wasn’t until the 1960’s where the silhouette got its proper attention. We’re talking Space Age fashion, Twiggy and flare silhouettes. The letter line was also a key piece for the late 1990’s fashion.

So as a silhouette through time, its definitely worthy of the spotlight this week!
