Fashion Terminology

Folks! What’s better to-do on a Saturday than learning about some fashion terminology? Impossible to cover them all, but let’s talk about some random ones that might be useful or at least fun to know about!
biedermeier fashion

Ham sleeves

Kind of the most flattering name of them all, but kind of the coolest sleeves there is (or have been to be honest). However, the ham sleeves were popular during the Biedermeier era (1820-1850) and were mostly just a massive piece of fabric. The sleeves were heavily oversized and kind of like the harem pants but for the arms! Interested in learning more? Read about the Biedermeier fashion here!

Choker

So the theme for this post is apparently terrible fashion terminology. A choker is nothing else than a necklace that’s wrapped around your neck! A definite accessory babe of the 90’s and is back in the spotlight again due to the 90’s/grunge fashion that is back in business! They’re quite the statement and the perfect go-to whenever you feel like doing a throwback. Add a flannel shirt, a pair of baggy jeans, a beanie and a white tee and you’re welcome!

fashion terminologyHatter

Perhaps the best name for a profession (or maybe just because we’re bonkers about the Mad Hatter aka Alice In Wonderland). A hatter is someone who makes and designs hats. Definitely a profession that’s not as popular as it’s been in the history, but nevertheless a charming one indeed! Hats today are mostly minimalistic and better off for the daily life (except for finer events), and they’re more commercial than find handcraft. But we love ‘em though even though they might not be as eccentric as the Mad hatter’s!

Go Fashion Bold

Folks, there’s no day like today to get things started. We mean, yesterday is gone and tomorrow is not here yet, so why not do it today? So today, or this week in general, we dare you to go fashion bold! Frankly speaking, we dare you to exceed the lines of your comfort zone and elevates your fashion game.

How to go on about it

To go bolder than your average fashion is something that is highly individual, what’s normal to one can feel bold and insane (though chic) to another. So we can only give you some suggestions that people normally have a hard time go fashion boldgetting around.

  • Silhouette. For starters, dare to play with your silhouette. Highlight your waist, show your legs or go fashion with an off shoulder top. Playing with the silhouette can definitely be a strong detail in a plain outfit.
  • Play with colors. Don’t match your colors with black or white. Try to match them with each other instead. How about beige and army green? Or why not go pink and red? Or blue and orange? It’s summer and we’re pretty sure you owe it to the season to go all bonkers with the colors!
  • Patterns. We know that patterns are not for everyone, but we also know that there’s a pattern out there that fits someone. If you’re already out and about with the patterns. Pair your pattern with another pattern. Check out tips on how to here!

What to think about

Going bold is about daring it. Dare to make a statement of fashion and dare to steal some of the spotlight. Also, don’t think about it too much, fashion is not words, fashion is physical; materials, clothes. The only way to wing it is kind of just to do it. And believe it or not but nine out of ten times are you the only one that cares or is noticing what you’re wearing! Pssst, checkout fashionista Chiara Ferragni’s instagram for some inspo!

Met Gala 2016

So yesterday was the date for the fashion and social event of the year in NYC, The Met Gala 2016. Kind of the place to be for the fashion magic and definitely the room where it happens! If you want to know more about the history behind the ball, checkout our post on the Met Gala here!

Recap of trends

The theme for Met Gala 2016 was Manus x Machina: Fashion In An Age of Technology. One of the trends spotted on the red carpet was metallics, people from Gigi Hadid to Jourdan Dunn and Poppy Delevingne worked the shiny armour. Another trendy statement was the floral pattern. From subtle flower power to statement pieces, florals for spring was a fact. Another haute couture piece, with resemblance to a skeletonish, was Kate Hudson’s masterpiece to dress (design by Versace). Regarding the beauty department, the smokey eye was a go-to and flawless Beyoncé went all in. Hair-wise, singer Ciara went greyish as well as Jourdan Dunn, a genius move indeed!

But enough of us talking, below are three fashion moments from yesterday! And pssst, don’t miss Claire Danes Zac Posen dress in the dark, it’s lit! (And could we please be invited next year?)

Surprise! My 6th #MetGala Red Carpet! THANK YOU #EsteeLauder + #Balmain! #JS4EL #ManusxMachina
