Bill Cunningham

In honor of legendary street style photographer Bill Cunningham (who passed away last week), this week’s spotlight post is dedicated to him.

Life of Bill Cunningham

Bill Cunningham (1929 - 2016) was a New Yorker at heart and a street style photographer at mind. His iconic pictures of the everyday fashion of the New Yorkers have been a feature in fashion since the 1970’s. Born and bred in Boston, and two months at Harvard University, he moved to New York when he was 19. From an early age he got in touch with fashion, a love that would last his entire life. Before bill cunninghambecoming a fashion photographer he designed and created women hats. Famous people such as Marilyn Monroe och Jackie Kennedy wore his creations. His photographies were discovered in the late 1970’s by the New York Times and he had regular columns in the paper until his death. Bicycling around New York in his blue jacket and constantly working, he captured it all.

Legacy of Bill Cunningham

The corner of 57th street and 5th avenue was one of his favorite spots to capture street style fashion from. With his eye for fashion he picked up current trends, as well as introducing new designers to a wider audience. Cunningham was more interested in the style of ordinary people rather than styled celebrities, a perspective he remained true to during his time as photographer. He saw the city and the fashion transform through his lens for over 40 years. When people looked at the fashion of the runway, Cunningham focused on the fashion of the people. Cunningham have done several exhibitions through the years and in 2010 a documentary about his life was made. Street style fashion, and fashion in general, is changed through the mind and eye of one brilliant fashion icon.

Thank you Bill.

Greta Garbo

We talked about the 1930’s earlier this week and mentioned the blooming glam of Hollywood during the decade. One of the stars we mentioned was Greta Garbo, the anonymous swedish movie star!

Early Years

Born in 1905 in Stockholm, she spent her early years in the capital and at the age of 14 began working at the fashion department store P.U.B..She soon began modelling, where a commercial for the store would become her first movie role. She later began studying acting at the age of 17, and would soon star in silent movie The Saga of Gosta Berlin which would become her breakthrough.

Hollywood years

She followed up her success by starring in numerous silent movies, Anna Karenina (1927) to mention one. As the movie industry went from silent movies to sound movies, many actors careers ended due to the change. Garbo however adapted successfully and her first movie of sound, Anna Christie (1930) became a huge success. The success would continue and she was in total nominated for four Academy Awards throughout her career. Her work ethic was rather anonymous as only a few people got to see her in action, she never did interviews nor attended premieres or events. She ended her career in 1941 after her movie flopped.

Style Icon: Greta Garbo

Her breakthrough in Hollywood came perfect in time as Hollywood stars became major fashion icons. Even though she remained private in life, her performances and charisma on screen left a remarkable impact on the time’s beauty dimension. Her well defined eyebrows, doe eyes and thin lips were iconic and her soft elegance would become a trademark. She also wore pants and flats which was an exception for women at time. Although little is known about her and her mysterious life she managed to turn the unanswered questions to a legacy and centered her light to the cinematic performances.
