Chic And Cozy Winter Fashion. Ideas on how to dress your best and staying warm during the winter months! | The Fashion Folks

Chic and Cozy Winter fashion

When it’s winter, life tends to get a bit low. It’s not only painfully cold, windy and dark but also a lot of snow! How much I love winter, snow and Christmas, even I have a hard time embracing it all and still look chic. Frankly speaking, I can barely get up in the morning and put on decent clothes, as one just wants to stay warm and cozy. So here are some ideas for chic and cozy fashion. Fashion that sort of will keep the feeling of a warm bed but still will have you on the chic side. They are all a bit lazy perhaps, but genius nevertheless. And while we’re at it, here is the first post on winter and fashion in this series: How To Stay Warm And Fashionable.

College Sweater

The biggest thank you to model off duty fashion for making the college sweatshirt a chic and cozy item to count on. They are no longer just the face of college (sort of), but comes in chic colors, prints and with a bit of edge. (Yes, we all do remember the Kenzo sweater). A college sweater is a warm piece for the winter months and when styled right, it’s more than chic. I love the contrast of a statement embellishment and the lazy approach of the college sweater. Or why not faux leather pants and a sweatshirt with a motif? They’re too good though.

Oversized Scarf

If you don’t own one yet, are you sure you have ever survived a winter? The oversized scarf must be the modern fashion equivalent to a shield in the context of weather. It will literally protect you from the windy life and snow all over the place. Doing an oversized scarf in a fun color or pattern is also great for adding a bit of life to the outfit. Go plaid, leo or dots. Any print that ought to light up your fashion game but also keep your warm and sane.

Pyjama Top

Now this is going lazy for real, but a pyjama top is more or less socially accepted these days. It should be one of those luxurious-looking ones and you can work it as any other blouse. With their loose fit, they are counted as comfy and with the elegant touch of style they go for chic. Pick one in silk or silk-similar material to get that glossy feeling. If you want to go full pyjama cozy, opt for a full set. If you’re not sure whether about it, I suggest reading this post!

Anything Knitted

The question that remains is truly what we would do without knitted pieces. They are life. From knitted sweaters to knitted beanies, gloves and scarves. They will not only keep you cozy for real, but also add a chic level. You can choose them in whatever color, shape or style you want. So why not go full crazy knit when you can? Knitted clothes are also favorable of pairing with contrasting textures.

Folks, hope you’ll embrace chic and cozy winter fashion with the tips. What are your best tips for a chic but lazy fashion winter ahead? XX

How To Dress Colorful In The Winter

Folks, it’s unfortunately quite the common thing to dress in neutral colors during the winter months. Most common of them all are perhaps black and grey, that both are minimalistic and suits everyone. However, my job as owner of this site, I do think I at least should encourage people to dress colorful in the winter. You know, get the fashion love going!

Why You Should Dress Colorful In The Winter

Since winter wear tend to be more expensive and more of an investment, rather than just another fashion purchase, people tend to buy winter clothes in more basic shades. Nothing wrong with it, but it often means that people are dressed in dark colors several months of the year - rather dull I’d say! Cause, honestly speaking, isn’t it during the darkest month of the year we need colorful and fun clothing item the most? . So that’s why I’m a firm believer in adding color during the winter months. And pssst, as the holidays are up and coming, it’s a perfect time to add red/green or color in general to your outfit. Before getting to the tips, another psst is that you also can just wear whatever colors you want and embrace the colorful life hence the season!

Ways To Dress Colorful

Invest in one colorful jacket

As stated above, it’s most common to have winter jackets in neutral colors as they tend to be expensive. But if you are already down with black, camel and grey, why not let your next investment be in a colorful shade? Perhaps red, pink or blue? Pick the color you love the most, or the one that suits you the most, and see the difference it makes. I always feel energized when wearing the best colors for me. It adds that extra glow to the outfit as the details are just in tune with one another. Faded colors, such as pastels, are also great for winter. They don’t make the same statement, but they still bring some nice color.

Colorful Accessories

Now, you don’t necessarily need to embrace the same palette that exists in the candy store, but adding some colorful details won’t hurt. If you wear your grey coat, add some colorful accessories that will make the outfit. How about burgundy gloves or a pink beanie? A little color is enough for the touch up! Read more here about the power of the accessories.

Keep the rest of the outfit colorful

Another way to do it is to keep the clothes, colorful. Contrasting colors by the clothes and the jacket is genius for creating some tension and excitement in the outfit. I’m sure you have some colorful jeans or pants laying around that works well with your selection of winter coats. If you’re unsure about colorful statement, the neutral jacket will balance the statement color of the pants. You can also do a colorful top and let it hint, a chic detail to rely one! Don’t be afraid to work color (or prints too for that matter), just because the weather is some degrees colder. Here are some fun ideas of color combinations to try!

As stated above, isn’t it color we need the most when fashion is the most dull? It is indeed folks! How do you dress colorful in the winter, or do you do it at all? Xx

How To Stay Warm And Fashionable

So here’s a relatable fashionista problem for you (if you’re living in colder areas): how do you stay warm and fashionable at the same time? The problem that is, is that our fashion game is mostly on point when the weather is bearable. Like, spring, summer and the first part of fall. After that, fashion is kind of a constant battle between what one should be wearing and what one wants to wear. That chic jumpsuit that everyone is working, seems to be a good idea in theory, but when you’re standing there and you can’t feel your legs, you’re trying to remember how cold one can get before ending up with a cold or a urine infection (yikes).

So, is it possible? Can it be done? Can you dress warm and manage to look chic at the same time? Well, of course you can! With some smart tricks of layering, planning ahead and some embracing of sweater weather, you’ll be more than fine. Here’s how to stay warm and fashionable:

How To Stay Warm And Fashionable For Fall and Winter. Here's how to dress warm and look chic when it's cold outside! | The Fashion Folks

7 Ways To Warm And Fashionable:

Warm Materials

Invest in pieces that are warm as they are. Knitted clothes of course, but also wool. Investing in sweaters or jackets with at least 40% wool is a great way of staying warm with just one clothing item. Instead of doing 3 layers of clothes to gain the same effect, do one piece that does it for you. Another obvious, but important item that is life-changing, is wool socks. Will save your feet for colder days and also look stylish with boots. For a vegan alternative, fleece is also a warming material. Even though it’s not a material for fall weather, invest in a jacket that’s lined with fleece.

High Boots

Wearing high boots is another great example. High boots is perfect for rainy and windy days, as well as keeping the legs a bit warmer. They’re also fashionable, adding that extra detail to a look. We listed OTK (Over The Knee Boots) to be one of the must-have items this fall. Of course because they’re chic, but also because they’re warming.

Accessories

Well this is a brainy one! Accessories, belive it or not, will definitely keep you warmer. A hat, a scarf and a pair of gloves and you’re good to go for the day. The accessories also adds a great fashion level to your look, as their color and style contributes to the fashionable touch. We don’t say that they all should be matchy matchy, but if you’re unsure: stick to matching gloves and hat, do the scarf in a contrasting color. Read more about hats here!

Layering: Quick Tips

So layers are to some equal to a chic look, others a painful outfit that limits the mobility. And it can be both, truly. Too many layers are hard to work with as they often are uncomfortable. The solution to the problem is knowing what clothing items to pick for a layered look. I’ll get back to this in a post later, as for now though: 1. Begin with a tight long sleeved top, this item should be invisible. 2. Add a shirt 3. Put on a cardigan, preferably in a flowy style, or a sweater. 4. Put on the jacket, pick one that’s more defined but with enough room for the sleeves 5. Finally, add a vest if you want too.

That are five layers that won’t outdo each other. The different styles of the layered look will also add some chicness, and be bold when you go for different textures and colors! A layered look is also perfect for dressing in color scale!

Tights Underneath

So this is cringe-worthy to some, and I partly agree. But if you want to be able to wear certain pieces for colder days too, you’re gonna have to compromise. Jumpsuits, midi skirts and maxi dresses are all clothes that are more suitable for warmer temperatures. They can be worn during fall and winter too though, all with the magic of tights underneath. They’ll keep you warm and still not interfere with the look of your outfit. Give it a go before you go all judgemental (and yes, you can thank me later)!

Invisible cardigan

Okey there’s no such a thing as an invisible cardigan (lol, in Harry Potter perhaps), but when it comes to fall/winter there is. An invisible cardigan is a cardigan that fits perfectly under your jacket, but without hinting below. The proportions of the jacket is larger than the cardigan, therefor you have a hidden layer of clothes that won’t disturb the cool contrast of the jacket and your outfit. When you’re inside, you just take off the cardigan too, as if it would be a part of the jacket.

Protect Yourself

And lastly, use your brain, aka protect your body parts where you usually freeze. The feet, hands and the head are usually the first parts people think about. But wind blowing in the neck is not to mess with, and cold arms is just terrible. So be brainy here and use long sleeves under your jacket, socks in your shoes and a pair of gloves wherever you go. And a scarf, turtleneck or a high collar jacket to protect the neck. (Fun fact: In the 19th century people realized that high collars were terrific when it came to protection from harsh weather, that’s why many men’s jackets have insanely overdimensioned collars. See here).

Beauty Pastels

Beauty pastels? Yes folks, a great way to keep the vibe of the candy store is to bring in some pastels in your beauty life. We’re talking; eyeshadows, blush, eyeliners, nail polish and even hair accessories. As we mentioned in Pastels In The Winter, the white snow is a perfect match against the pastels so why not embrace it through your makeup as well? If you’re in for this, pastels are nicely matched with one another to get a soft contrast. Kind of crazy but kind of sweet - just like the candy store!

White In The Winter

We talked about wearing white in the winter in December, and we think this goes for nail polish as well. Playing with white shades is a fun way to keep things interesting but also fashionable. White nail polishes are also flattering for almost any nail form or length there is, as it’s enlarging your nails by the effect of the white. It’s also quite matchy white the snow and charming if we may say so. And if you’re one to use darkes palettes of clothes in the winter, some bright white for your nails can’t hardly harm you. And lastly, the fact of the matter is that white is a great base for fun patterns! White in the winter is a go! Here’s a nail tutorial we did back in October that hopefully should give you some inspiration!
