The perfect fall wardrobe

Yes we know, there’s no such a thing as a perfect fall wardrobe and we haven’t magically changed it now either. BUT, if we may say so, we’ve somewhat reached a good level of awesome in its definition. These pieces are basics, they work for every style and we kind of just stole their awesomeness and connected them to fall honestly. The perfect fall wardrobe? Well, almost at least!

The basis of a perfect fall wardrobe

The idea of a perfect fall wardrobe is knowing what your key pieces are. These are also called basics as they are there to ease your fashion game. The key pieces work whenever and are easy to deal with. Though we love our colors and patterns, we do suggest to keep the key pieces in neutral colors. As they are more of the painting brushes than the actual painting, they are there to dress your body and not that much more. The fun part is left to accessories and The Perfect Fall Wardrobe For Fall 2016 | The Fashion Folksother pieces you want to keep in the spotlight. What we’re trying to say is, that it’s hard to have a decent fall style without some basics to rely on! And that’s what the basics are for, helping you establish the perfect fall wardrobe.

The idea behind a great key piece is that it should be a neutral color, shape and style and also:

  • Not steal the attention
  • Match your style and fit you perfectly
  • Be easy to build an outfit with
  • It should work for many occasions

Knowing your key pieces

The thing about basics though is that they’re highly dependent on what your style looks like. To some, a denim jacket is a key pieces whilst to others it’s a statement. What your basics are comes down to your preferences of style, which often lies in the silhouette. If you like a preppy look, your key pieces are more likely to be strict in their shape, like a defining LBD.

Nevertheless though, have we tried to pin it down to five universal pieces. These ones are basic, they play a key part and they exist in so many different shapes and styles that you easily can find one for you. If you like your jackets defined, pick a coat that is defined etc. And the best part is that you also can wear just the five basics, which is perfect for days when you’re running out of options. So here we go:

The Five Items You Need

Jeans

Of course a pair of jeans is a must in every sane fashion person’s wardrobe (no offense). The jeans are a terrific key piece as they don’t steal the attention but accentuates the piece that does. 70s jeans are perfect for the layered fall look, skinny jeans are the best combo with OTK boots and flare are funny and dorky. A pair of jeans are also rather discrete which gives you endless of options for a statement top or a layered look. For fall 2016 in specific, we’d head for a top with statement sleeves or a piece in velvet to go with it.

Shirt

A shirt is both perfect for layers and superb with fall items such as hats and cozy cardigans. The center of attention for a shirt is the collar which can be classic, norm defying or Peter Pan if you want to head vintage doll. Of course it should be buttoned all the way up and why not add a bow or a necklace to frame the collar? For a warm and well-defined look, pull a sweater over the shirt and let the collar, the sleeves and the hemline be visisble under the sweater.

Scarf

We’re not sure if you’re real if you don’t own a scarf by now. We can’t stress enough about the difference this piece can make in your fashion life. It’ll keep you warm, it can be in any shape, pattern and color and it’s superb for pulling together a look. We think the scarf is a key piece as it is a great way of adding life to the outfit by color, pattern and flow of the piece. It’s also quite multifunctional as you can style it in different ways around your neck, but also tie it around your bag or why not go crazy and do it around the waist? You can take the scarf wherever you need it.

Coat

We’re not all coat people but a coat for fall is chocolate and strawberries, it’s fetch happening. Be specific with what sort of coat you want. Want to go modern? Pick one in a bomber jacket shape. Want to go fashionista? A midi-length is as trendy as ever. A coat adds an instant fashion level to your outfit and is great for dressing up an everyday look. As a coat is more of an investment, we suggest that you do one in a color you always can count on.

Midi Dress

We know, dress for fall is not optimal as you can’t work it without the tights or socks under. But this one is a dare card for you to try. If you think about it, a midi dress is somewhat the maxi version but more useful and more suitable for everyday fashion. It creates a nice fall look with the layers of a jacket and scarf to it, and it’s adorkable with socks or tights. We also love the fierce contrast of a midi dress and a pair of boots. The midi dress is key indeed!

Some final notes

If you feel like none of these pieces were for you. Don’t worry, you can track down your own style game instead and see what you’re missing. Follow the steps in this post, but instead of analyzing the fashion game of a fashionista, analyze your own fashion game!

Folks, we’d love to hear your idea on a perfect fall wardrobe! Have you done a post about it? Leave us a link in the comments! Happy fall folks!

How To Track Down A Style

Remember that we did a post on How To Get Back To Business earlier this August? And we kind of told you to go for the style you want and kind of just wing it? And we just sort of left you there with no clue on how to track down a style and make it yours? Well, we remember it too, and quite painfully as we do feel bad about “the tell but not show attitude”. But easy folks, we’ve got it covered for you this time (with the help of Olivia Palermo’s style)!

How to research

You probably already have a clear vision of what style direction you want to head towards. If not, check your Pinterest, your saved pictures on the phone/computer or what pieces you always tend to buy. Are they feminine, are they basic, are they floral? You might even have some style icons who’s style you always return to for inspiration. May it be a fashionista, a celebrity, a blogger or a model. If you don’t have one yet, go and get yourself one (it’ll make it a bit easier at least). After you know what style/person you want to dress more like, it’s time for the research. Scan Pinterest, google on google, scroll through their accounts or stalk the outfit’s page on their blogs. Collect outfits you love so you’ll get a better picture on what their style is like!

Pluck apart

Now it’s easy to save/pin outfits and think that they look nice and all. But frankly speaking, how many times does one successfully get a grasp of what their style is really like? Sometimes they look flawless in a dress, sometimes in distressed jeans and other times in a jumpsuit. Different pieces, different styles but somehow they still remain coherent in their fashion life. The secret? Well, it’s not about the clothes actually. Nope, it’s about the details that makes the style. Perhaps they always choose clothes within the same color scale? Or it’s always the patterns that are minimal? Maybe it’s the silhouette that always is clean? Knowing the foundation of one’s style is knowing what you need in your closet! We suggest you write down the answers from the questions below, that way you’ll get a list of essentials.

Here are 5 things to look for:

  1. What colors do they usually stick to?
  2. What silhouette do they use, well-defined or loose?
  3. Patterns, no patterns, what sort of patterns?
  4. The accessories, are they bigger and better or are they minimalistic?
  5. Are the clothes full of details or are they simple?

Make it yours

If you know where you’re going now and you know what you need, all that’s left is blending your everyday style and your beloved style to become one. We do realize that this sounds like a marriage, but your style should be timeless, it should be based on your core and it should always bring out the best of you. (So we’re not saying anything, but you know, we’re just saying). However, back on track: this is where you can break or make your new style. This step is not about buying an entire new closet and just wing it, and it’ll be a disaster most likely. No, this is about inventing what you already have. What essentials are similar to your style direction? What are you missing? So here’s some do’s and dont’s for this step:

  • Do see what you have and what you’re missing on the key list.
  • Don’t buy an entire new wardrobe, it’ll confuse you, the people around you and us too we’re sure. Just take a few items to start with and get comfortable with them!
  • Do slowly incorporate a piece in your style. Always wearing boyfriend jeans but you want to go preppy? Add that blazer or that blouse and see the awesomeness of contrasts!
  • Don’t forget to match the style with your silhouette too. Just because models off duty usually don’t have curves to think about doesn’t mean you don’t. Perhaps you need to add a belt, ignore an essential as it’s not flattering on you. Is the compromise fine? Yes, it’s your style it comes down to after all.

Final marks

Here’s the thing: Does this post mean that your own unique style is not working? Not at all. Does this post mean that you have to give up what you wear to wear what you want? Not at all. This post is about encouraging empowerment. The perfect style doesn’t exist, but that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t strive for it. Striving for perfection means reaching great. Personal style is about development and knowing how to track down a style is a part of going for better!

Folks? Keep your heads up and always be a stylish work in progress!

How To Go Fashion

How to go fashion? Yes folks, the deal is real! We may be fashion people at heart, but sometimes it still feels like our fashion game isn’t as strong as the style icons. So how do you do it? How do you go fashion?

Never more than three colors

An old style rule is to never use more than three colors in the same outfit. This includes shoes, bags and accessories. The reason behind it is to create a more balanced outfit which gives a more clean look. This rule has, of course, many exceptions as you can look stylish in monochrome, shades or in colorful patterns. But if you’re not sure why your outfit isn’t working, take a look again on how you’ve used colors!

Hang your coat/cardigan on your shoulders

Not only do we literally mean that fashionistas hang their jackets on their shoulders (at least for picuters), but we also mean that there’s a certain chill vibe to their outfit. More precisely: Effortlessly chic with a lot of effort behind it. What do we mean? When outfits sometimes looks to proper or though-through, add a detail that will make it more informal. Give your outfit an edge!

Be fearless

Perhaps one of the most popular style tips people give, but one that’s never tiresome. Be fearless in your pursuit of dressing. Dare to mix pattern with pattern, dare to go monochrome, dare to play with your silhouette. Try new styles, go through old vintage clothes and find some gems. The best fashionistas out there have a personality to their style, a trademark that gets them fashionable. Fashion is too much fun to go safe with. And you’ll never really know unless you try!
