Summary of the 1920’s

On Saturday it’s three months since our beloved 1920’s theme week. Since we can’t go back in time (especially not to the 1920’s glam world) we can only do a summary of the best of the 1920’s fashion and beauty. Folks? Here is our summary of the 1920’s:

Society during the 1920’sFransk_modeteckning._1920-tal._Médée._Jaquette_de_kasha_uni_bleu_lin_-_Nordiska_Museet_-_NMA.0032514

The 1920’s decade began with optimism, faith and happy days. WWI had ended and the prominent future was here. Paris and New York was two of the leading cities, both representing the chic urban life. The cultural life was rich in dance, music, movies and literature. The icons that amazed the world was Greta Garbo, Clara Bow and Josephine Baker to mention some. This was also the decade where the flapper girl was controversial and a figure for the new, more liberal, society. The decade also saw political changes as women began to live more independently and was able to vote in many countries after years of demonstration.

Fashion Designers and Beauty Ideal

As always throughout the course of history, the fashion followed the societal development. It was in the 1920’s where fashion designers such as Coco Chanel, Jeanne Lanvin, Jean Patou and Madeleine Vionnet led the fashion world. Chanel liberated women from the old and conservative corsets and promoted a more androgynous ideal. The haircut bob became controversial as women, according to society, should have long hair. As for the face, thin eyebrows and dramatic makeup was the go-to look and the look was most eccentric amongst the celebrities.

The fashion of the 1920’s

The fashion of the decade was characterized by its straight silhouette, the hips were discretely marked by a belt and the skirts were calf-length. Influences came from style era Art Déco and the v-neckline was common on both tops and dresses. Chanel (she kind of influenced everything) introduced the minimalistic look, consisting of pants and a sweater. The upper classed went luxurious with velvet, pearls and sequins; three popular features when partying as well! The flapper girls wore fringe dresses and the length of the dresses hit the knees.
