Time to sum up the men’s fashion trends fall 2017. As some of you are already aware of, fashion tends to be similar for women and men regarding trends. They share the same core and more or less goes after the same feeling to embrace. So, if you read this post on the fashion trends fall 2017, you’ll recognize a lot in this post! We’re talking sweater statements, orange and red as colors and a touch of the 1980s! Folks? Here is a recap of the men’s fashion frends fall 2017.

Men’s Fashion Trends Fall 2017

Sweater Statement

For the SS17 season, the statement making fashion was a fact and continues to peak for fall too. Especially the sweaters on the men’s fashion side have been perfect canvas to make a clear and loud statement, either by the power of words or the artsy side of motives. Valentino went statement and so did Dior Homme. The best part about this trend is that you can choose a print or text that reflects you and your style, a way of channeling clothes’ ability to speak. Men’s fashion tends to be rather neutral, classic and basic which further emphasizes the opportunity to mix it up with a sweater statement this fall!

Top To Toe Orange

Red is the statement color for women’s fashion, but so is also orange - which is the hottest color for men’s fashion. The interesting aspect is that the colors are done monochromatic. Top to toe orange and red is the way to embrace the color, with orange being leading for men’s fashion. Of course wearing orange in a subtle way will give you some style credit, but all the way orange will elevate the trend factor. Missoni did embrace orange full on and so did Prada. If you’re unsure about orange at all, go for the color in a situation you’re comfortable and where the color looks natural. Sportswear is a terrific example where orange often is beloved, even by the shy fashion people too!

Statement Shoulders

The 1980s might be done from a time aspect but manage to stay alive through the fashion revival. Especially statement shoulders are getting their fair share of attention. They’re most obviously done with blazers, coats and shirts; that makes up the base in menswear. This season the blazers are done in a statement shoulder manner, creating an inverted triangle as the silhouette. Match the blazer and pants and you’ll underline the silhouette further, but also make the shoulders blend in better with the print/color being consistent in the outfit. Dries Van Noten played with plaid and statement shoulders. MSGM took it navy, keeping the statement shoulders neutral in a navy blue color.

Plaid Patterns

The plaid patterns are a returning fact of matter each fall, but perhaps hitting a peak this season. They’re everywhere in womenswear and getting the spotlight going in men’s fashion too. Plaid is a popular pattern to do for men’s suits, which is mainly what’s been done for fall 2017. Not to forget, the plaid shirts which are pretty much a must for any hipster out there. Sunnei took it classic with a plaid patterned suit. Dsquared2 went layers with the plaid and Paul Smith embraced the ideal idea of a retro dude from Britain.

I don’t know if there’s a seasonal wardrobe that’s more to fun to build than a fall wardrobe. Mainly due to the fun colors, statement materials and the favorable ways one can create layered looks. Pretty sure that the majority of us have a good base to work with, but as the fashion changes by the seasons and trends, it can be fun to add a 2017 touch to go along with the basics. Here’s how you can build your perfect fall wardrobe 2017.

Perfect Fall Wardrobe 2017 - Trend Edition

Midi Length Coat

Let’s be honest, is a coat something you want to invest in? Yes! Is the midi length a style that is trending at the moment? Yes! Does this still mean that it’s a good idea to invest in the style, if you have yet to own one? Yes! The midi style is perhaps the most practical style for fall with the length keeping one warm and stylish. The style, especially in the neutral colors of black, grey and camel, will remain a fall basic as long as our modern fashion remains. Go for a classic reefer coat and it’ll undoubtedly pass the test of time. A reefer coat is perfect for layering too, with the blazer style being favorable for shirts, sweaters and turtlenecks under.

Mom Jeans/Boyfriend Jeans

Mom jeans are the trendier alternative for fall 2017, but some dislike them to a point where boyfriend jeans becomes the better alternative. The idea though is a pair of straight jeans done with a edgy touch. Not necessarily distressed, but preferably high waisted and with a loose silhouette. The jeans are fun to match with fall items of sweaters and shirts, with the high waisted style giving the option to create some balance in the silhouette. They’re also chic to do with boots or high heels to contrast the street style look. Think a 90s street vibe and you’ll hit the trend target!

Buttoned Shirt

I don’t know what kind of people that survive the fashion life without a buttoned shirt as they are THAT good. A plaid shirt is perhaps the ultimate one to do for fall, but you can easily go for a denim style or an all white and you’ll still cover the most important criteria for a fall wardrobe which is layering. A layered outfit will save you on any given fall day. A buttoned shirt is a great piece to layer with as it’s viewable with the high neck style and the long sleeves. Throw on a sweater, a coat or a cardigan and you already got some layers going. A cute little bow around the neck will add some elegance too, fun to contrast if you’re going for plaid!

Black Boots

Boots are obviously a must for fall and specifically the black boots. They are not only suitable due to their ability to resist uncomfortable weather conditions, but goes with all the typical fall outfits. Fun to contrast with the midi length, elongates the legs with black tights or pants and stylish to do with a pair of jeans! Go for heels if you want to add some height and balance to all the heavy layers for the top or take it low as the kitten heels are trending. The style of choice is yours!

Fedora Hat

Lastly, would a fall wardrobe for a fashionista be complete without a fedora hat? Think not! The stylish and structured style of the hat will save you on bad hair days and add the chic factor. As the style of the hat is straight, it balances voluminous outfits and adds structure. Choose one in a neutral color if you want to be on the safe side. Especially black fedoras are flattering to any outfit. On the other hand, hats in a fall color as navy blue or burgundy will also have your back!

To kickstart the first week of the fashion weeks, it’s in its place to do a full guide on where, when and what to expect! Like, what are we even gonna watch? Here’s a guide to the fashion weeks september 2017!

What To Keep Eyes On

Clare Waight Keller x Givenchy

Clare Waight Keller, the former creative director at Chloé, is to present her first full collection for Givenchy. The “twist” regarding this is that Riccardo Tisci, former creative director at Givenchy, had a very dark romantic style going on for Givenchy. Waight Keller is pretty much the opposite, which makes fashion nerds eager to see where she’s taking the classic french brand.

Continued Success?

Fairly new at their workplace, both Maria Grazia Chiuri (Dior) and Raf Simmons (Calvin Klein) succeeded big time last season with this iconic Dior statement and this iconic Calvin Klein coat (see below). Question is if both the designers will follow up the success with new “stopping the fashion world” moments. Not that commercial success, as well as social media attention, should defeat the creative importance, but sell figures are key (unfortunately).

The Next It Look

It’s always fun to speculate what will be the next it look the coming year(s). The 1980s have dominated the runway shows for more than a year now. A lot of oversized silhouettes, shoulder pads, voluminous clothes and office empowerment. These elements have been present for womenswear as well as men’s fashion, but also in the different styles such as minimalistic fashion, fashion blogger, street style, sporty and bohemian. Question is, will this look last a bit longer or will we find a new decade to intrepret?

Personal Favorites

Yeah yeah, I try to be as neutral as possible here but I undoubtedly have my favorite designers too. This September I’m extra curious about where Valentino is heading. With only Pierpaolo Piccioli leading the brand now (he shared it with Grazia Chiuri before), Valentino has slightly changed the design core. Less romanticism and more functionality. In other words, exciting to see if the new path continues or if Piccioli keeps on exploring new styles.

Another brand I’m always love to see is Delpozo. The brand has perhaps yet to reach the full mainstream audience (not even sure if I want it too though), but is always fun and a bit norm-defying with their looks. When a lot of designers are playing safe, in one way or another, we can always count on Delpozo for bringing statement.

Lastly, another designer that will be fun to watch is the up and coming Ulla Johnson who is the fashion world’s new favorite designer. She feels a lot like the new Isabel Marant with bohemian, wearable and likable looks. The wearability level is of the sort that the looks translate directly to streetwear even though they often have an unexpected twist or two. Hope Johnson will deliver another delicate and bohemian collection as the fashion world needs more eclecticism!

Folks! What are you looking forward to see from the fashion weeks September 2017? Streetwear, collections, any specific designer? Xx
