The Statement Necklace

So this is probably the one piece that will take your outfit from ordinary to extraordinary. From low to high, from fashion to fashionista. The one piece that gives life to a plain t-shirt and will always steal the spotlight. We’re talking about the statement necklace!

The statement necklace

So what counts as a statement necklace? As described above, it’s a spotlight stealer due to its often oversized scale and more is more approach! If it’s not colorful, it’s often very detailed and is anything but discrete. As a minimalistic necklace complements an outfit, without making too much of a noise, a statement necklace does the contrary.

History of the statement necklace

A big and fancy necklace is nothing new (the history of necklaces goes back all the way to the stone age, so it’s kind of old but gold). Another historic record of the statement necklaces are the ones the old Egyptians wore, they were large, colorful and got all the spotlight. Another great example of the historic use is the 1920’s, where pearls were popular to use as a necklace. A few years ago, statement necklaces were back in fashion and style icons such as Miroslava Duma and Olivia Palermo worked them (and still does). Another fashion icon that regularly pulls them off, and embraces the maximalism, is Iris Apfel. She’s simply the queen of more is more!

How to pull of the statement necklace

As with everything, it’s about how you match and style it. If you’re not too keen on the statement part, choose a necklace that goes well with a minimalistic outfit. Perhaps a black, grey or white one that blends in with the color of the outfit. If you want to highlight the piece, go for one in a bright color, or a necklace that sparkles.

The thing with a statement necklace is that it comes down to whatever you prefer. Do you want to go fashion bold with it? Dress it up. Do you want to keep it low key? Gor for jeans, t-shirt and a simple cardigan. If you want to be completely sure that your outfit is working, I’d suggest that you keep the details of the outfits very subtle. The statement necklace is the start of it nonetheless. If you want to play bolder than that, pick up the color/sparkle from the necklace and match it with a clutch, bracelet or a pair of shoes. See the outfit below.

  1. Great post. I used to always wear statement jewelry. After being engaged, I really just wanted nothing to overshadow my favourite piece – my engagement ring, so I went very simple, but from time to time, I still love to rock chunky, glittering necklaces and layer up on a minimalist outfit. 🙂 The thought of it makes me miss wearing all black in the Fall to Spring season when it was actually colder than where I am now. Thanks for the nostalgia. lol

  2. i dont wear that much statement necklace. i wish i dont have allergies 🙁 but the last month we had an occassion, it doesnt hindered me to wear one. hihi

  3. When I grow up I wanna be like Iris. I swear, that woman is a genius when it comes to clever nipping and tucking with clothes! I saw her a few times during NYFW and despite her age, she manages to look young!

I used to wear a lot of statement necklaces when I was younger (I have a very similar plastic chain necklace that I would rock) but for the past two years I’ve only been wearing a simply diamond necklace on a dainty chain. I think I’ve just become lazy….

  4. Man those Egyptians defined beauty and fashion, didn’t they!? This is such a great post on the different ways to wear a statement necklace. I love the idea you’ve suggested for those with a more minimalistic style, opting for a necklace that’s within the same color palette of the outfit. It’s great because you can still create that statement, but on a lower scale. Thanks so much for sharing, gorgeous, and I hope you’re having the most amazing week so far!

    1. They certainly did! We have so much to thank them for! Thank you love, that makes me so happy to hear! I love the idea of doing a subtle statement, so chic to do it in a subtle color! Same to you love! Xx

  5. I was once totally against statement necklaces, however through blogging I’ve seen some really unusual styling that has made me totally re-think that. Speaking of which, there’s SO much inspiration within the blogging community when it comes to fashion, I love it! Great post, as always – you get to the bottom of fashion/trends 🙂
