This Met Gala 2021 wasn’t it right? Might be just me, but this was undoubtedly one of the most boring Met Galas in years. I don’t know if the theme, American Independence, was too difficult to embody in a high fashion sort of way, but something went wrong. Hear me out, there were plenty of gorgeous gowns and creations, but Met Gala is more than just looking beautiful and displaying your body; it’s about fashion as art, fashion as a creative element. With this idea in mind, that this event is about artsy fashion AND looking gorgeous, not too many looks got it right. I also definitely missed modern Met Gala legends such as Beyoncé, SJP, Zendaya, Lady Gaga and Blake Lively. However, I’ve picked out a few gems and why I thought they were successful. Would’ve been more fun to dissect why some looks weren’t favorable, but let’s leave that discussion for the comments.
Met Gala 2021
The winner of the night? Kendall Jenner if you ask me. Yes, I’m also way too tired of all these semi-nude/transparent/sculpted dresses, but if you pay attention to the details you see the theme reflected. Jenner’s Givenchy dress was a modern version of Audrey Hepburn’s white evening gown in My Fair Lady. I loved the pearl fringe framing the bust, and the tiny stars embellishing the dress. The collar was a nice twist, and I love the subtle makeup and hair do. Just gooorgeous.
I understand if a lot of people thought Ciara’s Dundas dress was not too fashionable, but it was pretty good considering the theme. What’s more American than NFL? The neon sequins are refreshing, the football clutch is entertaining and hair and makeup was superb too. I mean, she definitely understood the assignment and created a memorable look for the evening and the theme.
Pretty sure the feathers of Sienna Miller’s Gucci look are real, which is a big minus, but I shall make an exception and ignore it for now. Miller’s salmon pink creation is so pretty. I love how the silver embellishment frames the upper body, and how the dress and the coat interacts. Her 1960s Bardot-inspired hair and makeup were so so so pretty with the subtle pink. Something about this look was just the very embodiment of old Hollywood glam in the 21st century.
Valentino haute couture is always a safe choice for a red carpet event as the dresses are STUNNING. This yellow, voluminous, dress was worn gorgeously by Normani, although I’m not too sure about the relation to the theme. Nevertheless, I thought the necklace and the earrings were gorgeous with the yellow, and also added another layer of glam. Makeup was also on point, but I’d love to see a matching headpiece with the dress, or just something that would’ve made it more artsy fashion.
Honestly, I didn’t even recognize Hailee Steinfeld with those bleach eyebrows, but this Iris Van Herpen dress was gorgeous. Definitely a mix of fashion, art and beauty. I though the makeup was interestingly done, and so was the blonde hair. The choice of shoes definitely worked with the dress, but wouldn’t it have been more fun with a pair that reflected the dress better? It would’ve turned up the fashion heat for sure. Not sure how this creation reflected the theme either, but it was definitely the Met Gala vibe. Loved it!
