Match Makeup And Outfit

Folks, you know I love details. I love when things are thought through and connected to one another. Believe it or not, but that includes makeup too. Like the genius idea to match makeup and outfit when it comes to color. Or I think it’s kind of  genius. Or not at all perhaps. I don’t even have a firm opinion on this, as it might be too detailed for its own good, but I’d love to hear your opinion. Anyways, here we go:

Why you should match makeup and outfit

I always find myself giving compliments when makeup is matched with an outfit. Not necessarily that the colors are a perfect match, but also when the lipstick is a great contrast to the clothes. Like when you wear white and work a bold red lip. Or when you wear pink shoes and pink lipstick. Or a metallic top and a matching metallic hue.

I often talk about pulling outfits together and this is a great example of it. The colors are connecting with one another which gives a proper impression. It’s harmony for the eyes as it register the look more easily. Let alone that colors empower each other, your mauve lips will look more deep with a matching top. So no wonder that I often pick this up in an outfit, it is nice when the makeup is paired with the outfit. Kind of bringing the fashionista life!

How to match makeup and outfit

So matching makeup and outfit is not as easy as it sounds. Especially if you head for popping colors. When doing popping colors they are often more favorable to do as accessories. That you match the color of your bag/shoes/scarf with your lipstick. If you do a dress in pink and pink lips, it’s a risk they’ll outdo each other. If you keep it to the accessories however, they’ll bring out the best of one another.

As for dove colors, such as fall colors, they are better off to pair as you may wish. As the colors are more deep and keen to look at (no offense popping colors), they don’t risk to become too much. In fact, doing a burgundy top and burgundy lips together is kind of adorable and perfect for a fall feeling. Not to forget, the intensity the color gets when its paired with the same hue. Even though your jeans might be burgundy, your top will do a better job at intensifying the color.

Or just ignore?

What’s left though with matching makeup and outfit? Well, it’s a risk of it becoming too matchy matchy. I love matchy matchy and I hate it terribly at the same time. It’s a fine balance of keeping it pulled together and having a look that’s way too done. And you know what I mean with way too done right? It sort of looks like you’ve done nothing but thinking about your makeup and outfit. Even if you haven’t, you risk of coming off as way too proper. As if you’d followed every style rule in a book and rules are to be broken right? So with matching makeup and outfit, there’s a fine balance of what is a genius style hack and what’s too much. As much as I love a perfect match, I love awkward fashion and combinations too.

As you might can tell, I could just go on and on about this and I’m not sure if I like it or not! Folks, what are your thoughts? Yay or nay for matching makeup and outfit? Yay and why if so? Nay and give me an example! Xx

  1. I’ve never thought to actually match my makeup and outfit. I do love a bold lip in contrast with a brighter outfit like the one pictured above. Makeup is always an area that is a constant work in progress for me so I always enjoy reading your tips! Have a great weekend babe!

  2. If your normal make-up routine is simple, I think it’s fine, but if you wear a lot, I think changing the colours and intensity is important. It wouldn’t look good if you have a thick heavy black eyes and bold red lip if you’re wearing a pale pink sundress. I agree with you!

  3. Yay to matching makeup and outfit! As you said it is not as easy as it sounds and can be a risky choice, but once you find the perfect colour combinations, it is easy peasy! I love to match the autumn colours and sometimes create contrast to make my makeup stand out 🙂 x

  4. I love, love, love matching my lipstick and sweaters during the fall and I’ve also done the lipstick and shoe match, too! I love the cohesive vibe they create. I really couldn’t agree more with your suggestion on avoiding a bold lip color in the same color as a bold dress or ensemble, I also think it’s a bit much and the two can fight for attention. However, it’s funny and amazing how the same can be done in a flattering way with darker colors, as you’ve mentioned burgundy. Thanks so much for sharing, gorgeous, and I hope you’re having the best week so far!

  5. I used to always be an advocate of matching my makeup to my clothes and I still do to some degree. Now, I often wear a contrasting lip color to match my clothes. For example, I’m wearing wine denim with bright coral lips. Whatever pops is my favorite 🙂
