Folks! It’s time for the last review from the fashion weeks for this time. I think Giambattista Valli is an interesting designer. He’s always staying true to his easy going, romantic, vision; which is nice considering how fast fashion changes these days. Here are some thoughts on Giambattista Valli Spring 2022:
Giambattista Valli Spring 2022
The collection had all the elements you’d guess of a Valli collection. It had a lot of white, pink, green and some looks of red. You also had lace, semi-transparent fabrics, tulle and the famous Giambattista Valli silhouette (a voluminous empire). The collection mainly focused on dresses, skirts and crop tops, as well as some jackets/blazers. If the collection were to be described, a dreamy garden party with Italian influences would kind of do it justice.
I mean, I like this collection. It’s a typical Giambattista Valli collection, with all the expected ingredients. The level overall is pretty high, with some individual looks that were really something else. Why I still might not sound overexcited is because this is normal. This is what you’d expect of Giambattista Valli, and although it’s often more interesting to look at, compared to many of his colleagues, maybe it’s time to start expect something more. As the old cliché: you’re not competing with others, you’re competing with yourself. I do think it would be favorable if Valli were to explore more contrasts in his collections. More leather, more knitwear and more denim. Try another color scale. Go for another vibe, just do something that pushes the boundaries of the aesthetic we know today. Because, as for now, I can’t tell the difference between this collection and one from five years ago; which should be an indication that it’s time to start something new. At the same time, yes, I wrote earlier that it’s nice that Giambattista Valli stays true to his core. But I don’t think that contrasting and exploring has to happen at the expense of his aesthetic. You can still create dynamic looks within a design profile.
Anyway, let’s talk about this collection in specific! I absolutely adore the transparent lace creations. This pink duo is adorable. I’d love it with a dark green handbag! I also love this white similar set, so simple and gorgeous with the fringed hemline of the top. And let’s not forget this red look, red with lace is always a good idea. The green looks of the collection are also superb, such as this one and this one. I love how the green is intense but wearable at the same time. I think the last look was also adorable, such a sweet shade of pink/orange (peachy?). There were some looks that had a Chanel vibe to them, which didn’t work as well. For instance, this one and this one. I’d rather see these looks in leather. Maybe a leather jacket, a white t-shirt and one of the pink tulle skirts? I mean, the collection works on its own, but in a bigger perspective, it would be nice to mix things up.
